Start with the opening, then the style

Material choices for sun, dust and wet winters
Woodland summers run hot and bright for long stretches, and that sun is hard on finishes — powder coat can chalk and fade, and plastic parts like photo-eye housings get brittle over years of UV. We spec powder-coated steel or aluminum for that reason, and where a gate sees regular moisture — a low damp spot, heavy shade, daily sprinklers — we add galvanizing under the coating, which is sound longevity practice anywhere. Fine airborne dust off the surrounding farmland is worth designing for too: on some properties it works into hinge bearings and operator gearboxes, so sealed, greasable hardware earns its keep. Wide flat frontage, columns already set
Picture a flat lot with two block columns the builder placed at the front line and a good deal of open sky around them. Here is how we'd handle it: measure the real column spacing and hinge positions, size the leaves so the finished gate doesn't bind against pillars that are often a few inches off from plan, and — because the frontage is exposed — pick a frame gauge and infill pattern that won't act like a sail. We'd draw it to the home's elevation, get your sign-off, then fabricate to those exact dimensions in the shop before hanging it with a UL 325-listed operator and the monitored entrapment-protection devices (photo-eyes and/or edges) the application calls for.

My frontage is wide open — will wind be a problem?
It can be, and it is a design input rather than an afterthought. A larger solid panel on an exposed lot catches more wind, so we size the frame gauge, hinges or rollers, and posts for that surface area. If you want the imposing solid look, we build it to carry the load; if you're open to an airier picket, that eases the wind story considerably.
Can you build to the columns my builder already set?
Yes. We measure the true spacing and hinge or track positions rather than assuming the plan dimensions, then fabricate the gate to fit. That is the advantage of building in-house — the leaf is cut to your opening instead of a stock size forced between columns that are often slightly off.
Swing or slide on a flat Woodland driveway?
Flat ground favors a swing, so it often comes down to setback: a swing needs depth for its arc so it doesn't reach the street or a parked car. Where that depth is tight, a cantilever slide runs parallel to the fence line and sidesteps the issue. We confirm which fits after measuring the approach.
Will the finish hold up to the summer sun?
Powder-coated steel and aluminum handle the heat and resist fading better than a painted finish, which is what we spec. Where a gate also sees regular moisture we add galvanizing under the coat. No finish is immune to years of UV, but the right buildup buys you a long life before it shows.
Does farm dust really affect the gate?
On some properties it does — fine dust can work into hinge bearings and operator gearboxes and add friction over time. We answer it with sealed, greasable hardware and by matching the operator to the gate's real weight and cycle count, plus a light maintenance routine. It is a manageable condition, not a dealbreaker.
