The decomposed granite and clay-heavy soils of the foothills make footing excavation demanding, and bedrock can surface unexpectedly — calling for specialized drilling or an alternate foundation design. Where the clay subgrade is expansive, differential soil movement stresses a footing and can misalign a swing or bind a slide track, so we set the footing to hold against it. Mature oak and pine roots often dictate the trench path; we detour around the major root balls to protect both the tree and the wiring, because a root that exploits a conduit seam later compromises the low-voltage insulation and causes intermittent power or communication faults.
