Wrought iron is the material people picture when they imagine a real estate gate: solid, ornamental, and built to outlast the fence around it. DC Controls fabricates iron gates in our own shop, and most of what's sold as "wrought iron" today is actually welded mild steel worked into the same ornamental forms, which is good news, because it's stronger and more consistent than historic wrought iron. What matters for a gate that lives outdoors in the Sacramento Valley is how that steel is finished and maintained.
| Ornamental iron/steel | Aluminum | |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Highest, resists impact and forcing | Good, but dents more easily |
| Weight | Heavy (factor it into the operator) | Light, easier on hardware |
| Rust | Will rust if the finish fails; needs upkeep | Won't rust |
| Look | Authentic ornamental detail, scrollwork | Close, but lighter profiles |
| Best for | Estate gates, security, classic homes | Wide gates, low-maintenance priorities |
An iron gate fails from the finish in, not the metal out. The protection is built during fabrication: cleaning the steel, priming it, and applying a durable top finish that seals it against moisture. We powder-coat where it makes sense for a hard, even shell, and we detail the joints so water can't pool and start rust where you can't see it.
Sacramento's heat, dust, and sprinkler overspray are the real enemies. A yearly rinse, keeping irrigation off the gate, and touching up any chip before it spreads will keep an iron gate solid for decades. When a finish does eventually wear, we refinish rather than replace, the iron underneath is almost always fine.
Traditional scrollwork and finials for estate and Mediterranean homes.
Clean vertical bars with spear or ball tops, formal and secure.
Ornamental face with a steel or screen backing for privacy.
Simple horizontal or vertical flat bar for contemporary homes.
Every iron gate we build can be automation-ready. We size the operator to the gate's real weight, which matters more with iron than any other material. Cost tracks with the amount of ornamental work and the gate's size; we itemize it once the design is set. We're licensed under #1114559 and build, finish, and install each gate in-house.
Iron is heavy and lives outdoors, so a few things have to be planned before fabrication starts.
Iron is the heaviest common gate material. If it's automated, we size the operator to that real weight so it doesn't burn out early.
Heavier gates need stronger posts and deeper footings. We size them to the leaf, especially on a swing.
Sun, sprinkler overspray, and dust drive how the gate should be finished. We spec the coating to where the gate actually lives.
Scrollwork, pickets, or flat-bar, drawn to the home so the finished gate looks original to the property.
On the left, an ornamental wrought iron gate we installed in Elverta. On the right, an iron gate being fabricated in our Loomis shop, prepped for finish and install. Building iron in-house lets us control the scrollwork, the joints, and the weight distribution, then size the operator to match, instead of ordering a one-size catalog gate and hoping it fits the opening.
With a proper finish and a little upkeep, decades. Iron fails from the finish in, so keeping the coating intact and sprinkler spray off it is what matters.
Usually, yes. The iron underneath is almost always sound, so we strip, treat, and refinish rather than replace the whole gate.
Almost always it's welded mild steel shaped into ornamental forms. It's stronger and more uniform than historic wrought iron, and it takes finishes better.
Keep the finish intact and water off it, especially sprinkler overspray. Touch up chips early. A well-finished gate rusts only where the coating has been breached.
Yes, as long as the operator is sized to the iron's weight. An undersized motor on a heavy iron gate is the fastest way to an early failure, so we spec it deliberately.
