A flat parcel with a long clear fence line suits a V-track slide; a heavy swing works where there’s arc room, with footings and an operator sized to the leaf. We choose from the actual driveway.
What a cheap rural install skips
- Standard wire run the full length of a long agricultural driveway, so voltage drop starves the operator from the start.
- Footings poured to a flat-lot spec in shrink-swell clay, so the post leans and the gate binds within a season or two.
- Conduit trenched through oak roots instead of routed around them, so root growth later crushes the line.
- Buried junction boxes left with weak seals, letting moisture into the low-voltage lines for intermittent faults.

My driveway is long. Does that complicate the gate?
Mainly the power side. Over a long agricultural driveway, voltage drops and an underfed operator labors and wears early, so we size the wire for the distance and, where it’s very long, consider a sub-panel closer to the gate. The trench also runs longer, which shapes the plan and the estimate.
Why do my footings need to be so deep?
The heavy clay common on Galt parcels shrinks and swells with the seasons, and that movement can walk a shallow footing out of true — leaning a swing post or binding a slide track. We set wider, deeper footings below that active zone so the gate holds its alignment. We confirm the soil from the dig.
There are old oaks along my driveway. Can you avoid damaging them?
Yes. Where roots line the approach, we hand-dig carefully or reroute the conduit around them, which protects the tree and keeps the line from being crushed as roots grow. Damaged roots later crush conduit and cause intermittent faults, so we route to avoid that.
Swing or slide for a big rural lot?
It depends on the fence line and grade. A flat parcel with a long clear run suits a V-track slide; a heavy swing works where there’s room, with footings and an operator sized to the leaf. We look at the actual approach before recommending one.
Do you locate buried lines before digging?
