Heat, cold, and the operator
Temperatures that push past 100°F degrade control-board capacitors and battery backups inside an operator enclosure. We account for that with proper operator selection and, where it helps, ventilation or shading so the electronics aren’t baking.
Cold-season ground movement stresses footings. We reinforce the footing at install so a swing’s leaves stay aligned through the freeze-and-thaw rather than needing seasonal adjustment.
Extended trench runs are typical here, so we size wire heavier to hold voltage over distance, and route conduit clear of the pine and oak roots that would otherwise crush it and cut power to the gate.

My driveway slopes. Will a swing gate clear the ground?
Not always on its own. A swing opening uphill can catch the driveway, so on a sloped lot we’d either use an operator matched to the grade or move to a cantilever slide that travels along the fence and avoids ground contact. We measure the slope on site and choose from there.
Does the winter cold really move footings up here?
At this elevation, seasonal ground heave can stress a footing and, if it’s under-built, shift a swing’s leaves out of alignment. We reinforce the footing at install for that movement so you’re not adjusting the gate every spring. It’s planned in from the start.
Will summer heat hurt the gate’s electronics?

What happens when the footing dig hits rock?
The decomposed granite up here often sits over shallow bedrock, so we bring rock hammering and design the operator pedestal around what we find. It affects the footing and the trench, which is why we assess the dig on site rather than quote it blind.
My gate is far from the house. Any power concern?
Long runs are common here, and they lose voltage. An underfed DC operator can struggle to finish its travel and wear early. We size the wire heavier for the distance and, where it’s warranted, look at a sub-panel closer to the gate so power stays consistent.
