Two things dominate a Somerset gate install: how steep the approach is, and what the shovel finds. A grade can rule out a swing, and a footing dig can move from decomposed granite to stubborn clay to solid bedrock in a few feet. Both are why we spec these jobs at the driveway, not from a catalog.

Grade decides the gate
A steep uphill approach is the classic reason a swing gate won’t work in Somerset — the leaf drags on the rising driveway before it ever finishes opening. On those lots a cantilever or V-track slide is often the practical answer, because it travels along the fence line and ignores the slope. Where a swing still makes sense, a slight rise can be handled with an articulated-arm operator that lifts the leaf over the crown. The footing is a soil-and-rock problem

The goal is a footing matched to what’s actually under the post, which is why we’d rather see the dig than promise a spec sight-unseen.

Picture a Somerset lot where the driveway rises hard toward the building, the footing dig hits decomposed granite over shallow bedrock, and mature oaks line the approach. We’d locate utilities and the septic field first, then plan a cantilever slide so the gate doesn’t fight the grade. We’d bring rock trenching for the conduit and pier work, bore around the major root balls, and size the wire for what’s likely a long run to the panel. The gate itself would be designed and built in our own shop to fit the opening.
What a cheap foothill install skips
- A swing gate forced onto a rising driveway, so the leaf drags and the operator strains from the start.
- A shallow footing poured without checking for bedrock or expansive clay, then heaved or shifted out of alignment within a couple of seasons.
- Conduit trenched straight through oak and pine roots; the roots later crush the line and take out safety-device wiring.
- Junction boxes poorly sealed against winter rain and fog, so moisture corrodes the control board and the gate faults intermittently.

My driveway is steep. Can I still have a gate?
Yes — the grade just steers the type. A steep or rising approach usually points to a cantilever or V-track slide, which travels along the fence and ignores the slope. Where a swing still fits, an articulated-arm operator can lift the leaf over a rise. We measure the grade on site and match the gate to it.
What happens if you hit bedrock during the dig?
It’s common in Somerset, and we plan for it. Where bedrock is shallow we bring rock trenching equipment and key the piers to the rock. It affects the footing design and the trench path, which is one reason we prefer to assess the dig on site rather than quote a footing blind.
How do oak and pine roots affect the install?
Their root systems are wide, and we route or bore the conduit around the major root balls rather than cutting through them. Roots that get nicked keep growing and can crush the line later, cutting power to photo-eyes or loop detectors. Planning the trench around them up front avoids that.
Does the clay soil really move the gate?
Where expansive clay is present, yes. It swells and shrinks with the seasons and can shift a shallow footing, throwing a swing out of alignment or binding a slide track. On a lot where we find it, we set deeper piers below that active zone. We confirm the soil from the actual dig.
My gate is far from the house. Will it get enough power?
It will if the wire is sized for the run. Over a long foothill driveway, voltage drops and an underpowered operator labors and wears early. We size the conductors for the distance and, where it makes sense, look at a sub-panel closer to the gate so the operator runs consistently.
