Designing within the guidelines
Where a neighborhood has strict architectural guidelines, they often push toward a specific wrought-iron design or clad-wood panel that matches the existing home aesthetics — and column spacing at the entry, itself set to the architectural style, decides whether the gate can be one large panel or must split into two narrower sections. The deeper setbacks common here give a dual-swing the room it needs, while a single cantilever slide is the answer where side clearance is limited. On corner lots or higher-elevation parcels toward the foothills, wind exposure calls for a more robust structural spec — heavier frame gauge and hinge selection — so the gate stays stable. We fold all of that into the drawing and submit for approval before fabricating.

Picture a home in a master-planned community with a deep setback, an HOA that specifies iron gates in a set color, and a wide entry between two columns. Here's how we'd handle it: design a dual-swing wrought-iron gate to the guideline's material, color and pattern, matched to the home's elevation, and confirm the column spacing supports two balanced leaves. The drawing goes to the HOA first; once approved, we fabricate to those exact dimensions in the shop and install with a UL 325-listed operator and the monitored entrapment-protection devices the application needs, plus battery backup for outages.
Built for open-country sun and damp
Lincoln's open landscapes mean a lot of direct sun, and the Central Valley heat cycles rapidly degrade a finish — powder coat fades and clad-wood inserts can warp or crack prematurely if they aren't specified for it. Those cycles also stress hinge bearings and weld points on heavier gates. Wet winters, with heavy rain and morning fog, push moisture into unprotected steel and can compromise the electrical connections inside an operator enclosure, shortening the life of control boards. My HOA controls gate design — can you work within it?
Yes. We design to the guideline's material, color and pattern requirements and provide the drawing for approval before fabricating. Building in-house means the finished gate matches exactly what the HOA signed off on.
Can I have one wide gate, or does it have to split?
It depends on your column spacing and the guidelines. A wide opening often works better as a balanced dual-swing pair, both structurally and visually, than as one very large leaf. We size the choice to the span and confirm it fits any HOA constraints.
I'm on a corner lot near the foothills — does wind matter?
It can. Open exposure on a corner or higher-elevation parcel catches more wind, so we spec heavier frame gauge and hinge selection so the gate stays stable. It's a structural detail we build in from the drawing stage.
Will the gate open in a power outage?
When it's specced with battery backup, which we recommend given the outages that come with wet winters here. Automated gates use UL 325-listed operators with the required monitored entrapment-protection devices, and the backup keeps the gate cycling when the grid is down.
