A dead or jammed gate doesn't have to mean you're stuck. The operator's manual release disengages the motor so you can hand-move the gate — open to clear the drive, closed to secure the property. A surge killed my gate even though it has surge protection — how?
Surge protection has limits, and a strong winter surge can overwhelm it, letting enough through to fry the control board. When we repair the operator we don't just replace the board — we check the existing protection and upgrade it where needed, since a new board behind the same inadequate protection is likely to fail in the next storm.
An oak limb bent my gate and it's jammed — what now?
Don't keep running the operator against a bent, jammed gate — that can damage the motor and arm. Use the manual release to disengage the operator and hand-work the gate only as far as it moves freely to clear the drive. Then block the opening to secure the property. We'll straighten and reinforce or replace the damaged frame and re-align any knocked-out safety devices.
My gate cycles erratically or seized after a dry spell — why?
Decomposed-granite dust works into limit switches and gearboxes and can cause erratic cycling or, if it isn't cleared, a full seizure. We clean and reseat the switches, service or replace the affected gearbox parts, and recalibrate the travel. On a single-access foothill gate this is worth catching early, before a seizure strands you.
Will my Knox-box work if the operator is dead?
Not always — if the override depends on the operator's power or release and that's what failed, responder access can be affected. When we repair the gate we verify the manual and override access work, not just the everyday automatic path, so a fire or medical crew isn't held up at a single-access foothill property.
